English II
Course Description:
The goal for English II is to build a solid foundation of knowledge, skills, and strategies that will be refined, applied, and extended as students engage in more complex ideas, texts, and tasks. Students will add to the list of various genres of classic and contemporary narrative and informational texts that will be read and analyzed throughout high school. English II students will connect with and respond to texts through critical response and stance. They will learn to evaluate for validity and quality, to balance and expand their perspectives promoting empathy, social action and appropriate use of power. Critical Response and Stance offers students the lens to assess and modify their beliefs, views of the world, and how they have power to impact them.

Units of Study: Through two semesters, we will cover vocabulary, grammar, writing, short stories, poetry, The Crucible, I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced, The Pact, Of Mice and Men, Tuesdays with Morrie, Raisin in the Sun, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.

- All RBHS policies will be followed.

- Participate
- Assessments: 40%
- Papers/Projects: 30%
- Minor Assignments/Homework: 20%
- Participation/Journals: 10%
- If you miss a class period, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get the assignments from me or from the daily handouts folder. You will have one class period per absence to make up homework or tests/quizzes.
- Late work (if not absent) will be five points off for each day it is late.
- You are responsible for all assignments on the day that they are due regardless of absence between the assignment and due date. If you are in class on Monday, and a paper/test is assigned for Wednesday, and you are absent on Tuesday, the paper is still due on Wednesday.
